I found quilting quite by chance in 1995, when I stopped into a little quilt shop on our town square just to see what they were all about. I signed up for the 6-week beginner’s class in hand-piecing, hand applique, and hand-quilting. Halfway through that beginner class, I signed up for a 10-month ”mystery medallion” class. The sample quilt was so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself! The first month, we made a center block. Each succeeding month we added a border. The subject matter for the border was always a surprise, so we couldn’t plan ahead. Each student was making a completely different quilt, and the monthly show and tell was fabulous. I learned so much in those two classes. Nothing throws me for a loop anymore. I can deal with running out of fabric and having to add another, I can fit any border to any size center, and most important of all, I know how to let the quilt “speak” to me, and follow the way it wants to go.
I purchased my longarm, a Gammill Optimum, in June of 2005. It’s taken over what used to be my formal dining room. I love being able to finish my own quilts, and enjoy working on others’ quilts as well.
Here are some of the quilts I have made or worked on. I’ve been pretty lax about taking photos, so there are only a few special ones posted prior to 2009, but I’ll be better going forward.
