I started painting in 1990, when my mom gave me a gift of 4 weeks of beginner acrylic painting lessons. She had always painted, and I remember mom and her friends painting in our family room every week.
I didn’t think that I could do it, since I was never any good at art, but she and the shop owner told me that if I could follow directions and be patient, I could learn decorative painting. And I did! The first night I painted a recipe holder shaped like a little blue bird, painted a solid color, with a dip-dot eye, and three comma strokes for feathers. By the end of 4 weeks, I knew how to basecoat, how do basic strokes, how to float color, and how to do linework — all the basics. And I was hooked. While I was painting, I forgot about everything else, and was calm and stress-free. Cheaper than a shrink, and lots more fun!
